Eilean Glas Lighthouse, Scalpay
The more energetic can reach Eilean Glas lighthouse, now a historic monument, by walking a few miles across moorland.
A plaque on the wall of the original light, the round building just to the left of the foghorn reads:-
" One of the first four lighthouses in Scotland built in 1788
The later tower, and keepers houses were built 1824-1826 by Robert Stevenson.
The last Great Auk in Scotland was captured here in 1921
Visitors welcome accommodation and refreshments"
Alas as the light is now fully automated the last comment is no longer relevant.
A smaller plaque reads:-
"This was the house occupied by Alexander Reid the first lightkeeper who came in 1789 and stayed for 35 years"
